The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved the first generic form of Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, the first drug to receive approval in the United States since the patent for Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra expired in June 2014.
The approval follows a similar FDA approval earlier this year for the drug’s use in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, the primary cause of death in patients with heart failure.
“This new generic drug is a welcome development in the market for Pfizer’s well-known and important Viagra formulation,” said FDA Commissioner FrankI. “Pfizer is thrilled to have received such approval.”
The FDA’s approval follows a similar agency approval for another popular prescription drug that Pfizer once marketed in the United States in late 2003. Other popular brand-name drugs also have Viagra’s patent.
The FDA also approved the generic form of Viagra in September 2014, after receiving a letter from a patient that indicated a “personalized approval” of the generic drug. The letter stated that the drug was “designed to address the specific needs of men with erectile dysfunction.”
Viagra, which has the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, is one of Pfizer’s two branded and generic drugs.
The approval of Viagra comes after a recent hearing in theNew England Journal of Medicineabout a recent study that indicated that men who took sildenafil for the first time may be slightly more likely to have erectile dysfunction than men who had not taken it for at least six months. In particular, the study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in March 2015.
In a letter to physicians and patients, the FDA said that the study’s results “does not support the use of sildenafil for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension.”
The letter indicated that the FDA had not reviewed the data in the study and had not determined that the results of the study indicated that Viagra was effective in treating the condition.
The FDA said that the company had not made any changes in its marketing strategy or in the marketing authorization of the generic Viagra.
“This is an important development,” said FDA Commissioner FrankI. “The agency will continue to monitor the progress of the study and will make the final decision on whether to approve the generic formulation of sildenafil.”
The FDA also said that approval of the generic form of Viagra, which Pfizer already has approved, is in the company’s best interest. The company may still sell the generic version of Viagra, but the company is reviewing whether to sell the generic version.
The generic version is the latest in a growing class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors, also known as sildenafil citrate.
The FDA approved the generic form of Viagra, the same medication that has been approved for more than a decade for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men.
Pfizer, which makes Viagra, has already approved the generic form of Viagra for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
“As with all medications, including Viagra, there are important considerations when evaluating the drug’s potential benefits and risks,” said Michael L. McVary, chairman of Pfizer’s clinical research and development division. “This approval is especially important in the treatment of certain serious medical conditions.”
McVary added that the approval “may be the most important, but not the only, aspect of the study to address this issue.”
The FDA’s approval will allow Pfizer to continue to market its drug to patients in the United States and around the world, which could lead to a new generic version of Viagra approved for sale in the United States.
